TERENCE is a three year long project for the design and development of the first Adaptive Learning System (ALS) for poor comprehenders, hearing and deaf, and for their educators. TERENCE aims at offering innovative usability and evaluation guidelines, pedagogical models, AI technologies, and an ALS for reasoning about stories, in Italian and in English.

Pianta Emanuele

Dr. Emanuele Pianta graduated at the University of Padova in 1990 with a thesis on the Relevance Theory applied to the task of Automatic Language Generation. He worked as a research consultant at the University of Venice for two years, on LFG-based Parsing and Generation, Computational Morphology, and teaching Logic Programming. In 1993 he joined FBK as tenure researcher.

Tonelli Sara

Dr. Sara Tonelli graduated at the University of Bergamo in 2000 in Foreign Languages and Literatures. After her graduation, she spent two years at the University of Munich attending a specialization course on Computational Linguistics. From 2003 to 2006 she collaborated with the University of Venice, Dep. of Language Sciences, working on the development of the Venice Italian Treebank, on anaphora resolution and textual entailment.

Gennari Rosella

Dr. Rosella Gennari is an Assistant Professor at the KRDB research centre. After her degree in Mathematics at the Pavia University in 1995, she graduated in the Masters of Logic at the ILLC of Amsterdam University in 1998. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in Computer Science at the ILLC in 2002. After her PhD, Gennari was appointed post-doc ERCIM fellow at CWI, Amsterdam, in 2002, and 3-year post-doc fellow at the Automated Reasoning Systems division of FBK-irst, Trento, in 2002.

Nutt Werner

Werner Nutt is a Full Professor at the KRDB of Computer Science at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano since 2005, where he was Vice-rector for research from 2006 to 2008. Prior to this, he was a Reader at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh (2000-2005) and a Senior Researcher at the German Research Center of Artificial Intelligence (DFKI).

Moens Marie-Francine

Prof. dr. Marie-Francine Moens is a research professor (BOF-ZAP) at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium. She received a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1999 from this university. She leads the Language Intelligence and Information Retrieval (LIIR) group at K.U.Leuven. Her main research interests regard text based information retrieval, text mining and natural language understanding. She is author of two monographs published by Springer and numerous articles in proceedings of international conferences and journals.

Kolomiyets Oleksandr

Oleksandr Kolomiyets received B. Sc. and M. Sc. degrees in Computer Science (NTUU KPI, Kiev, Ukraine), specialized in Cognitive Science with an emphasis in natural language processing and obtained the M. Sc. degree in Cognitive Science from the University of Osnabrück (Germany).

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Nejdl (born 1960) has been full professor of computer science at the University of Hannover since 1995. He received his M.Sc. (1984) and Ph.D. degree (1988) at the Technical University of Vienna, was assistant professor in Vienna from 1988 to 1992, and associate professor at the RWTH Aachen from 1992 to 1995. He worked as visiting researcher / professor at Xerox PARC, Stanford University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, EPFL Lausanne, and at PUC Rio.

She has gained experience in project management across various countries and research topics, focusing mostly on co-design development of interaction with product-systems and environments.

Barbara Szepesi Szucs

Barbara Szepesi Szucs graduated as a graphic designer and illustrator at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design of Budapest in 2012. She is specialized in children's book illustration. Her diploma work was an interactive book for children which she wrote, designed and illustrated. She works at MOME Creative Technology Lab as a graphic designer. Her special interest is in using new media to extend the experience of reading.

Zénó Szabó

Dr. Barbara Arfé is researcher and assistant professor in Developmental and Educational Psychology at the University of Padova. She obtained her PhD in Developmental Psychology at UniPD in 2003. In 1999 she was the co-author and recipient of a grant for the project “The linear and the hypermedia story”.

Prof. Ferdinando di Orio is Full Professor of General and Applied Hygiene of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of L'Aquila, Rector of the University of L'Aquila for the years 2004/2007 and re-elected for the years 2007/2011. He was Chairman of the Regional Coordination Committee of the Universities of Abruzzo (CCRUA) for the period 2004-2007, and is member of the same Committee for the current triennium 2008- 2011.

Marc Marschark

Prof. Dr. Marc Marschark earned his undergraduate degree at Cornell University and his graduate degrees at the University of Western Ontario. He then spent 13 years at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he did research on relations of language and cognition among hearing and deaf adults and children. Research involving language and learning in deaf children proved most interesting to him, and 1988 he received a five-year Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health in order to retrain in the development of deaf children.

Prof. Domenico Passafiume is an Associate Professor on General Psychology at the University of L'Aquila.The research activities are geared to issues of cognitive and clinical neuropsychology. The clinical neuropsychology research on patients with brain pathology started since 1981; during the period in Veterans Hospital in Pittburgh PA, the study of cognitive modification in degenerative pathologies (particularly in Parkinson patients) had started.

Oakhill Jane V.

Jane Oakhill is Professor of Experimental Psychology at the University of Sussex. She worked briefly as a primary (elementary) school teacher, and her interest in children’s reading comprehension problems led to a D.Phil. on that topic. Since completing her D.Phil. she has worked on various research projects (including deductive reasoning in children and adults, circadian variations in human performance, and adult language comprehension) but has always maintained a research interest in children’s reading comprehension (in particular, individual differences).
