TERENCE is a three year long project for the design and development of the first Adaptive Learning System (ALS) for poor comprehenders, hearing and deaf, and for their educators. TERENCE aims at offering innovative usability and evaluation guidelines, pedagogical models, AI technologies, and an ALS for reasoning about stories, in Italian and in English.

WP1 (Context of Use and User Requirements)

D1.1 Slegers, K. and Gennari, R. (KUL and LUB). State of the art of methods for user analysis and description of context of use.
This document reports the state of the art of methods user analysis and a description of the context of use TERENCE users. It is a report of part of the activities concerning Task 1.1. Download.

D1.2Di Mascio, T. (UnivAQ). User classification, user identification, user needs, and usability goals.
This deliverable mainly serves to identify users classes by personas and user requirements. In particular, it describes the first users classification, identification and user needs, and on the first usability goals. Download.

WP2 (Global System and GUI Design)

D2.1.a Alrifai, M. (LUH). Conceptual model specification.
An important step in designing and developing an adaptive learning system is the conceptual design of all relevant models: the user model, the domain model, the environment model and the adaptation model. This document describes the conceptual design of the TERENCE Adaptive Learning System. Download.

An important step in designing and developing an adaptive learning system is the conceptual design of all relevant models: the user model, the domain model, and the adaptation model. This document describes the conceptual design of the TERENCE Adaptive Learning System. It is an updated version of D2.1a, which focuses on the TERENCE ontology and reflects on the updated conceptual models that resulted in from the work conducted in the second project year. Download.

D2.2 Arfe', B. (UniPD). Repository of Stories: in English and in Italian.
This document introduces to the repository of TERENCE stories. It describes their characteristics and the process through which stories requirements have been identified and TERENCE stories have been created. See also the technical annex and the user guide of story semplification.

D2.3 Gennari, R. and Alrifai, M. (LUB and LUH). Game Design Document.
The TERENCE games are specialised into smart games, which stimulate inference-making for story comprehension, and relaxing games, which stimualte visual perception and not story comprehension. This deliverable describes the design of smart games and relaxing games, focusing on smart games. Download. See also a demo of the prototypes.

D2.4 Alrifai, M. (LUH). Global Architecture Design, Adaptive Engine, GUI. This document reports about the global design of the TERENCE system. In particular, this report starts by reviewing the key functional and non-functional requirements and use cases, sketches the global system architecture and finally, describes the different components of the system and their interfaces. Download.

D2.4.2. Alrifai, M. (LUH, 2013). This document reports about the final global design of the TERENCE system. The report starts by reviewing the key use cases highlighting the implemented functionalities and features. Next, the global system architecture is sketched. And finally, the different components of the system and their interfaces are described, with special focus on the graphical user interface and the adaptive engine. Download.

WP3 (Design and Implementation of the NLP Modules)

D3.1 Moens, M.-F.and Kolomiyets, O. (KUL). State-of-the-art and design of novel annotation languages and technologies.
The TERENCE Adaptive Learning System will offer smart game that help improve reading comprehension for low-literacy and deaf children. This document describes the foundations and specifications of the TERENCE Annotation Format (TAF). In addition, this document contains the state-of-the-art of semantic annotation technologies leading to a high level design of the technologies to be developed in TERENCE. Download.

D3.2.1, D3.2.2, D3.2.3 Moens, M.-F.and Kolomiyets, O. (KUL). Automated Annotation Module in English and Italian. The releases contain the natural language processing modules, one for English and the other for Italian, for recognising and annotating relevant entities and relations for story comprehension. The annotation process is then complemented via the reasoning services of WP4. The annotation language is defined in D3.1.

D3.3.1, D3.3.2, D3.3.3 Moens, M.-F.and Kolomiyets, O. (KUL). Repository of Annotated Stories: in English and in Italian. The result of the annotation process of D3.2 consists of the repositories of annotated stories, in Italian and English.

WP4 (Design and Implementation of the Reasoning Module)

D4.1 Gennari, R. (LUB). State of the Art and Design of Novel Intelligent Feedback. August 2011. The deliverable reports on: the design of the game prototypes of the first year of the TERENCE project; the state of the art of automated reasoning for the annotations and the games. Download.

D4.2.1, D4.2.2, D4.2.3 Gennari, R. (LUB). Automated Reasoning Module. These releases serve to check the consistency of the stories wrt the intended semantics and enrich them. See also the related technical annex.

D4.3.1, D4.3.2, D4.3.3 Gennari, R. (LUB). Generation Service and Repository of Textual Smart Games. These releases serve to generate XML structures and populate them with text data for smart games, then stored in the repository of textual smart games. The structures are modelled on top of the game framework designed in D2.3. The generated data are then used by the visualisation module (D6.2) for automatically assembling them with the appropriate visual components. See also the related technical annex.

WP5 (Design and Implementation of the Illustrations)

D5.1 Ruttkay, Z. (MOME). Repository of Illustrations. See this link. The releases consist of the illustrations for the system graphical user interface (GUI) of the TERENCE system.

D5.1.2 Ruttkay, Z. (MOME). The deliverable contains the revised illustrations (for stories, games and their related items), for the stories and games of deliverables D2.2.2 and D4.3.2, and necessary for the long scale evaluation of WP7. Visit link.

This deliverable reports about the state of the art of illustrations styles (for stories, games and their related items) and interaction paradigms used in applications and games relevant for illustrations and games visual and interaction design task for TERENCE. D5.2 Ruttkay, Z. (MOME). Repository of Relaxing Games. See this link. April 2012. The releases consist of the relaxing games for the system.

D5.2.2 Ruttkay, Z. (MOME).The deliverable contains the second release of the relaxing games, revised in light of the small-scale evaluation. Visit the link.

D5.2.3 Ruttkay, Z. (MOME).The deliverable contains the final release of the relaxing games, revised in light of the large-scale evaluation. Download.

D6.1 De la Prieta Pintado, F. (USAL). GUI and Global System Development. The releases consist of the graphical user interface (GUI) and global system development. See the final learner GUI.

D6.1.2, D6.1.3 De la Prieta Pintado, F. (USAL).This deliverable represents the final release of the integrated TERENCE ALS. Download.

D6.2 Vittorini, P. (UnivAQ). Visualization Module. The releases provide the module for assembling textual and visual components for the graphical user interface (GUI) of the system. See this link.

D6.2.2, D6.2.3 Vittorini, P. (UnivAQ). This deliverable is the second release of the visualisation module. Visit the second release or the third release.

WP7 (Evaluation)

The document deals with the expert-based evaluation of the of the available TERENCE resources. It contains a brief state of the art of the used expert-based methods and some references to other TEL expert-based evaluation studies. Download.
